There’s gold in this here earth

Hello gorgeous earthlings,

Let’s talk about magic.

Last weekend, I spent a super lovely weekend celebrating my LA family and their 35th wedding anniversary near Yosemite. We laughed, told stories, and exchanged jokes. We learned about the history of the park, what color the earth is when gold is present, and how to lucid dream. These serendipities were not on the itinerary, but just happened, like magic.

Today, I’m releasing a song called Force Field, which is a collaboration with the brilliant Melodieux. Some of you may recall (because I told everyone) that my niece, Ms. Bernadette Rose, asked her mom if, when I sing the word “we” in my songs, I am referring to Bernie and me because, “Auntie Laurie loves me so much.” Well, I’m sobbing just thinking about that question.

Naturally, I then wrote a song about the moment that I held baby Bernie alone for the first time. It was the day she got out of the hospital, and my sister and brother-in-law went to rest, so I got Bernie all to myself. And was I in heaven! I first played Debussy. And then Coltrane. And Miles, I don’t remember what else.

“Our love is a force field. Never felt so real. I’m always here.”

When I’m singing Force Field, I rekindle that feeling, of us dancing around the room, with that new baby smell and her little hands and the weight of her in my arms, like magic.

Tomorrow, I’m back in my hometown, playing a show to so many family and friends. I’m playing some old favorites, and new unreleased songs. And, with some luck, we will also find magic.
can’t wait.

always,
